We The People viert op 6 december in het Zonnehuis Amsterdam een Extra Soul-avond met spoken word, live muziek, dj-sets en een ode aan de jaren 70 en SoulTrain, waarin diverse bewegingen en trots op identiteit centraal staan.
If you’ve been to We The People before, you know we got the soul. But December 6 we go Extra Soul with a poetry night and afterparty full of spoken word, (live) music, groove, funk – and you guessed it – soul. And bet we’re doing it in style: so get your dance moves and SoulTrain inspired outfits ready! With spoken word by JNM The Naked MC and Sydney Lowell, live music by Illnoledge, and dj sets by JJAQ and WaxFiend. More TBA. In the monumental venue of Zonnehuis Amsterdam, we celebrate an era that has witnessed many socio-political and cultural movements across the globe: the 70s. Movements that challenged existing systems, shook the cultural landscape and inspired pride in our different identities. Many within We The People’s community still build on these movements today, be that through decolonization, black pride or sexual liberation, just to name a few. Even spoken word poetry builds on the legacy of black artists from this very era, who reflected their realities in the art form. As a platform that was created to give platform to the voices of these movements especially, We The People pays homage to this influential era with a head-nod to SoulTrain, an iconic television show started in 1970, created for free and prideful expression of African American cultures through dance, music and fashion.
Join us in this celebration, show us your Extra Soul! This event is hosted in English, yet performance languages vary.
