Over Beethoven’s Symfonie nr. 1 wordt vaak gezegd dat het de gedurfde opening is van een nieuw symfonisch tijdperk, eentje die de mogelijkheden van het genre zou herdefiniëren. Echter, op de avond van de première deelden traditie en innovatie waarschijnlijk het podium: men denkt dat ook Mozart’s Symfonie nr. 40 werd uitgevoerd. Het samenvoegen van deze werken in hetzelfde programma biedt een fascinerend perspectief om het genie van beide componisten te verkennen.
Mozart’s Symfonie nr. 40 is een dramatisch meesterwerk, vol operatische intensiteit en een gevoel van urgentie dat bijna theatraal aanvoelt. De turbulente opening en emotioneel geladen melodieën zetten de toon voor een hoog dramatisch effect, in contrast met de meer klassiek beheerste – maar niet minder revolutionaire – benadering van Beethoven’s Eerste Symfonie. Het naast elkaar plaatsen van deze twee symfonieën benadrukt de stilistische verschillen tussen de late klassieke periode en de opkomst van iets geheel nieuws.

The Music Collective Amsterdam is ontstaan uit de artistieke behoeften van enkele in Amsterdam gevestigde musici. Hun gedeelde visie is om frisheid, veelzijdigheid en een actuele benadering naar de klassieke muziek te brengen. Gevestigd in de kosmopolitische stad Amsterdam, haalt de groep ook invloeden uit de verschillende nationaliteiten van haar leden. Dit alles komt tot uiting in de programmering en werkfilosofie op artistiek niveau.
MCA brengt de grote werken uit het orkestrale repertoire naar het publiek, aangepast naar een kleinere formatie, waarbij nieuwe klanken worden ontdekt en vanuit een dynamisch en aantrekkelijk perspectief voor het publiek worden geïnterpreteerd. Het ensemble valt ook op door zijn flexibiliteit, waarmee verschillende formaten naar het concertpodium kunnen worden gebracht: van werken met 3 | 4 musici tot meer complexe formaties van 13 | 17 spelers.
De leden van MCA maken deel uit van enkele van de beste orkesten in Nederland, zoals het Nederlands Philharmonisch Orkest | Nederlands Kamerorkest, Rotterdams Philharmonisch Orkest en Concertgebouworkest. De musici zijn ook te zien bij gerenommeerde formaties, zoals de Royal Scottish National Orchestra, Frankfurt Opera, Seoul Philharmonic, Freiburger Barockorchester, en anderen. Hun activiteit brengt hen naar de beste theaters en concertzalen ter wereld, zoals het Concertgebouw (Amsterdam), de Philharmonie (Parijs), het Musikverein (Wenen), de Berliner Philharmonie (Berlijn), Carnegie Hall (New York), Teatro Colón (Buenos Aires), Teatro alla Scala (Milaan), Elbphilharmonie (Hamburg), Kennedy Center (Washington).

Beethoven’s Symphony No. 1 is often regarded as the bold opening of a new symphonic era, one that would redefine the possibilities of the genre. However, on the evening of its premiere, tradition and innovation likely shared the stage: it is believed that Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 was also performed. Their inclusion in the same program provides a fascinating lens through which to explore the genius of both composers.
Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 is a dramatic masterpiece, bursting with operatic intensity and a sense of urgency that feels almost theatrical. Its turbulent opening gestures and emotionally charged melodies set a tone of high drama, a contrast to the more classically poised—yet no less revolutionary—approach of Beethoven’s First Symphony. Placing these two symphonies side by side highlights the stylistic differences between the late Classical period and the dawn of something entirely new.

The Music Collective Amsterdam was born as a result of the artistic needs from some musicians based in Amsterdam. Their shared vision seeks to bring freshness, versatility and an actual vision to classical music. Based in the cosmopolitan city of Amsterdam, the group also draws on the influences and the different nationalities that make up the group’s members. All this is reflected on an artistic level in the programming and work philosophy.
MCA brings to the public the great works of the orchestral repertoire adapted to a reduced formation, discovering new sounds and interpreting them from a dynamic and attractive point of view for their public. The ensemble also stands out for its flexibility, which allows different formats to be transferred to the concert stage: from works with 3 | 4 musicians to more complex formations of 13 | 17 players.
