Some like it Modern is a celebration of new music through unconventional instrumentation. Both residents in Amsterdam, Mafalda Oliveira and Marta Mata play together since 2021. The project was born due to Mafalda’s passion for one of the lowest instruments of the saxophone family, the baritone saxophone. In that regard, Marta, who loves chamber music playing, has taken the challenge of exploring what this instrument of a deep warm sound can do together with her piano. Their wish to uncover the possibilities within this chamber instrumentation inspired the duo to interpret already renowned musical works through arrangements, as well as to commission works from young talented composers, bringing a fresh and emotive musical path to the audience.
Mafalda is a Portuguese freelance saxophonist who loves creating with other artists. In 2022, she graduated from the masters of classical saxophone and chamber music with a distinction at the Conservatory of Amsterdam, and has won the Dutch Classical Talent Award as a member of the Maat Saxophone Quartet. Through the development of projects with new music and innovative concert settings, Mafalda aims to contribute to the future of her instrument and the performance of classical music.
Marta Mata is a young Portuguese pianist that has been studying at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam under the guidance and teaching of Professor Frank van de Laar since 2020. Simultaneously with her solo piano practice, she engages in many chamber music projects, where in some of which she works with many contemporary composers and premieres works. In 2021 she was awarded the scholarship Formação em Artes no Estrangeiro by the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, which helps her pursue her current Master’s studies.
