Het Festival of Unexpected Subjects is een interactief cross-overfestival in 't Zonnehuis waar kunst, wetenschap en filosofie samenkomen rond de vraag hoe kunst en creativiteit kunnen bijdragen aan zorg en verbondenheid.

Op donderdag 25 juni 2026 strijkt het Festival of Unexpected Subjects neer in het historische Het Zonnehuis in Amsterdam-Noord. Op dit vrolijke festival onderzoeken kunstenaars, sociaal-wetenschappers en filosofen samen met het publiek wat kunst en alledaagse maaksels met zorg te maken hebben. Op wat voor manier zorgt kunst voor ons? Hoe zorgen wij voor kunst? En hoe maken we ruimte voor wat broodnodig is, maar moeilijk in woorden en argumenten is te vatten?
Tijdens het festival experimenteren we samen zorg-vuldig met de rol van het publiek als vormgevers en mede-onderzoekers. Ons brede aanbod aan interactieve workshops nodigt jou als bezoeker uit om de thema’s van het festival te onderzoeken, met hand en hart. Kom filosoferen, maken of zelfs meemuziceren en dansen. Daarnaast brengt het festival unieke cultuuruitingen: zo hebben we een kunstexpositie en maakte componist en pianist Philipp Rüttgers speciaal voor deze editie drie nieuwe werken. Cross-over festival for Art, Science, and Philosophy
On Thursday, June 25th, 2026, the Festival of Unexpected Subjects will take place at the historic Het Zonnehuis in Amsterdam-Noord. At this cheerful festival, artists, social scientists, and philosophers join the audience to explore ways to think about, cherish and practice caring and being cared-for, in particular through art or mundane makings. In what ways is art caring? How may care include art? And how do we make space for what is essential, yet difficult to capture in words and arguments?
Throughout the festival, we will mind- and carefully experiment together with the role of the audience as co-creators and co-researchers. Our diverse range of interactive workshops invites you, as a visitor, to explore the festival’s themes with both hand and heart. Come join the philosophical conversations, create something tangible, or even make music and dance along in the workshops. Discover, participate in your own way, and enjoy!
In addition, the festival features unique cultural expressions: we will host an art exhibition, and composer and pianist Philipp Rüttgers has created three brand-new works especially for this edition. He will perform them live alongside fellow musicians and dancers from the jazz and improvisation scene. Expect the unexpected, come think and create with us!
