The beautiful stained glass façade of the Pinksterkerk (Pentecostal Church) in Heemstede immediately catches the eye, and its effect inside is to produce an overwhelming sea of colours. This magnificent post-war heritage building has been repurposed for venue hire.

Colourful and modern
The Pinksterkerk can be hired for concerts, conferences, lectures and receptions. It is one of Heemstede’s most remarkable heritage buildings. In what is otherwise an austere building, all the attention is drawn to the long façade of stained glass windows set in concrete at the front; the geometric shapes in relief make it a unique work. The effect on the inside is equally special, because the stained glass colours the light in the large church hall in as many as 70 different shades.

As soon as you enter, you feel the sense of hope and desire for modernity of the post-war era. Below the church hall is a basement with meeting rooms that are rented to a care organisation. The venue is equipped with modern amenities such as a sound system, theatre lighting, heating, bathroom facilities and a stage. Much has been done to optimise the acoustics, which makes the church a popular rehearsal space and concert venue.

The building
Post-war national heritage
The Pinksterkerk, built of reinforced concrete and brick, dates from 1956-1957 and was designed by the architectural firm Chr. Nielsen and J.H. Spruit. In 2010, the church was officially listed as a national heritage building, because it is a characteristic example of post-war church construction. Under the leadership of then state secretary Ronald Plasterk, in 2007 it was included in the provisional list of the 100 most eminent monuments from the reconstruction period of 1940-1965.

The Pinksterkerk is Stadsherstel’s first post-war monument. The Protestant congregation of Heemstede sold the property because it owns another building in Heemstede that was adequate for its needs. With a number of adjustments, the building is highly suitable to hire for events. By choosing a Stadsherstel venue, you help us to preserve cultural heritage in Amsterdam and the rest of the metropolitan area.
I was familiar with the glass mosaic at the Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam, which he also designed, but I was totally stunned by this work by Berend Hendriks.
Once we were playing the impressive piece Lux Aurumque (‘Light and Gold’) when the sun broke through the clouds and shone through the stained glass façade. A beautiful moment.
